Celebrating National Strawberry Day

Did you know that strawberries are members of the rose family? These tasty red fruits are technically not a berry but an accessory fruit or flower receptacle. They are not only juicy and flavorful, but are also low-calorie, fat-free, and rich in antioxidants like anthocyanins, polyphenols, and vitamin C. Strawberries are good sources of fiber, manganese, and potassium. As a result, strawberries have anti-inflammatory properties, prevent tooth decay and gum disease, improve heart health, reduce the risk of cognitive decline, and can be protective against certain cancers.

Strawberries are versatile and can provide sweetness to smoothies, pies, pancakes, cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, bread, and fresh salad. Try adding these fresh, juicy berries to water for a bright, flavorful infused drink. For a guilt free dessert, cover the strawberries in antioxidant-rich dark chocolate!

Look for deep red strawberries that are firm and plump, without appearing too overripe. Strawberries from local growers have the best flavor, richest color, and lowest travel time from the farm to your plate. Raleigh’s own State Farmers Market provides an abundance of strawberries, with a season running from as early as mid April to as late as mid August. Eating local not only supports the area’s hard-working farmers, but it also helps preserve the nutritional integrity of the fruit! The longer the strawberries undergo temperature changes, sit under artificial light, or are exposed to air, the nutritional value may decrease. To ensure you are consuming optimally rich produce, aim for purchasing your fruits and veggies from farmers who plant, nurture, water, harvest, and package your food locally.

So now that you know a brief overview about one of the nation’s favorite fruits, head on over to your local farmers market during the peak of strawberry season to taste the fresh, juicy, and flavorful berries that we know and love.
